I love British wool! Britain has managed to revitalize their yarn industry by focusing on breed-specific and British wool and they have been very successful. I picked up a ball of West Yorkshire Spinners yarn when I was on holiday in Europe and really enjoyed knitting with it…..So, when I discovered we could get it for DocKnits, I jumped at the chance.
“Situated in the original home of the British Worsted Spinning Industry, West Yorkshire Spinners combines state of the art technology with generations of expertise and unrivaled know-how to produce British hand knitting yarns and knitted garments of exceptional quality
At West Yorkshire Spinners we are extremely proud of our British Heritage, we are one of the few remaining worsted spinning companies left in the United Kingdom. We firmly believe that knowing where our raw material comes from guarantees that the quality of the finished product is consistently high.
We source all our own raw material which is then produced into knitting yarn in our state of the art factory based here in West Yorkshire. This reduces the carbon footprint of our products and also enables us to manufacture at a very low cost. We feel our prices reflect these factors and gives us the opportunity to pass on the savings to you our customers.”
We have 4 different types of WYS yarn in the store that I will review for you.
WYS 4ply Signature yarn is great sock wool! We carry both the Country Birds Collection as well as the Cocktail line (sounds like you might need a Martini with this one!) The Country Birds collection works up into a fairisle style socks.
And the Cocktail line works up in a striped pattern. Both sock yarns retail for a reasonable price of $22.50 (one ball=one pair of socks)

One yarn that I cannot wait to try out is the Wensleydale Gems Collection. I encountered this beautiful sheep when I visited the Wensleydale Longwool Sheep farm in York. This breed of sheep, besides being really cute, provides a wool with a lot of lustre and shine that just sucks up the dye! The colours are amazing and if you like jewel tones, you should check them out. This yarn is DK weight and each 100gm has 225 m per ball and is reasonably priced at $12.50 for the great yardage it provides. Have a look at these jewel tones HERE
And have a look at some of these colours! YOWZA!!
I have found that as become a more “mature” knitter, my yarn choices have become finer and finer. No more bulky knits for me!! Dk and fingering weight have become my yarns of choice, but after I saw the Exquisite Lace yarn from WYS, I will be knitting me some lace!!. This yarn is 80% Falkland wool and 20% Mulberry Silk with a whopping 875 yds for only TWENTY BUCKS!! Peggy checked the price (twice) and this is the best deal going. It knits to a gauge of 32 stitches to 4″ on 2.75 mm needles. Have a look HERE at the selection
Lastly, we had to get some of the Bo Peep Luxury Baby yarn. This yarn is 52% Falkland wool and 48% nylon, so not only is it soft and warm, but it is also machine washable. It is a DK weight yarn with great colours (and names). Each 50 gm ball yields 122 yds. Check it out at this LINK
It is wonderful to be able to offer you a new line of beautiful yarns at a reasonable price. Grab a cuppa and come in and have a look!
